It seems that the local train stations attract great little restaurants. The Hungry Bear Cafe is tucked into the old ticket office at the Fort Washington Train station. The best access is off of Bethlehem Pike just before the train bridge if you are going north. If you park in the main train station lot you need to use the tunnel under the tracks to make your way over to the restaurant. The dining area is small but not crowed and has about six tables. A large chalk board hangs on the wall behind the front counter and displays the current specials.
I've been watching their specials on Facebook and they always have something unique to offer. On the day I was here the specials were Catfish Sliders and a Calamari Pasta. I couldn't decide what I wanted so I just ordered a burger.
My choice was a good one! The burger patty was made with hand ground beef mixed with short rib. It was served on an ever so soft brioche bun with caramelized onions, lettuce and tomato. You get to pick a side and I went with the red skin potato salad. The potato salad was not like any I've had before. Bacon, peas and a honey mustard / balsamic vinegar concoction really worked well together. I added a drink and my total was about $8.50.
I like to label myself as a burger connoisseur and I have to say this one ranks up there with some of my favorites. The patty was made in house and never frozen. I know that doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary but it is. Most places serve frozen burgers from a box. The bun was very soft and tasty and the produce that accompanied the burger patty was crisp and fresh.
I will be back to sample some of there more creative offerings in the future. If you are local to Fort Washington the Hungry Bear Cafe is worth a visit.
