Based on Thornton Wilder’s play, The Matchmaker, the musical originally opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on January 16, 1964, and has been revived four times since then, with the most recent revival being the 2017 revival.
Hello Dolly! follows matchmaker, Dolly Levi Gallagher, on her journey to find Horace Vandergelder a second wife. Meanwhile, Ambrose Kemper, a struggling artist, is looking to get permission to marry Ermengarde, Vandergelder’s niece, with help from Dolly. When Horace Vandergelder leaves his store in Yonkers to go to New York, Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker, his clerks, give themselves a holiday off from work to travel to New York to find and kiss a girl. They wind up Mrs. Molloy’s hat shop, owned by widow Irene Molloy whose hoping to catch a gentleman’s eye.
