Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation reaps benefit of credit union dress down day

TruMark Financial Credit Union not only helps its members reach their financial goals but it also believes in being a good corporate citizen

FORT WASHINGTON, Pa. — Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that exist to help people reach their financial well-being. TruMark Financial® Credit Union not only helps its members reach their financial goals but it also believes in being a good corporate citizen.

To help charitable organizations reach their goals, TruMark Financial allows its employees to wear jeans on Fridays in exchange for a donation to various charitable causes. In September, employees wore jeans and raised $400 for the Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation.

Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation’s mission is to fund research to find a cure for children blind or visually impaired due to mutations in the CRB1 gene. There are an estimated 300 children in the United States with CRB1 with rare degenerative retinal diseases caused by a defect in this gene.

Kristin Smedley, president of Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation and the mother of two visually-impaired sons affected by this gene mutation, works tirelessly to raise funds in hopes of finding effective treatment. Smedley said, “I want my sons and other children affected by this disease to have the same experiences sighted children have. Every donation gets researchers closer to funding treatments and cures for this particular retinal disease.”
