Design of New Sandy Run Middle School Unanimously Approved

The schematic design is the result of collaboration of various stakeholders with a vision of student-centered learning.

MAPLE GLEN, PA - During a special legislative meeting on June 21, 2018, the Upper Dublin School Board voted unanimously to approve the design of the new Sandy Run Middle School. Known as “Option D-1” (see link on p. 2), the design of the new building supports teaming, a hallmark of middle-level education, as well as student collaboration and personalized learning.

The schematic design of the new Sandy Run Middle School is the result of collaboration of various stakeholders with a vision of student-centered learning that will accommodate best practices now and into the future. In the three story classroom wing, core classroom spaces are complemented by instructional areas for special education and service delivery as well as flexible areas for student and staff collaboration. In the single story wing of the building a planetarium as well as spaces for robust performing arts and physical education programming are included in the design. According to Dr. Jill Clark, Sandy Run Middle School Principal, “The design of the new building is the result of creative and informed staff, student and community input. We are excited about the enhanced learning opportunities that await our students.”

The approval of the footprint of the building allows the District to obtain the necessary permits for land development. With the schematic design approved, District stakeholders will continue the interior design phase of the project led by Breslin Ridyard Fadero Architects and D’Huy Engineering. During the construction phase of the project, the Annex will be razed and temporary classrooms will be installed adjacent to the main building. An indoor hallway will be constructed between the two spaces.
Dr. Art Levinowitz, Board President, commented, “After numerous meetings among the Board, staff, and the community we have decided on a building that is both efficient and capable of delivering our 21st century curriculum. The building will also be a wonderful asset for our community with two full-sized gyms, a 490-seat auditorium, and a cafeteria seating over 350 students that can also serve many community purposes.

The current Sandy Run Middle School opened in 1967 as Sandy Run Junior High School; the Annex opened in 1965 as Sandy Run Elementary School. Please visit the District website (www.udsd.org) often to remain informed about the Sandy Run Middle School Project, inclusive of planning updates and construction schedules. The District believes the new Sandy Run Middle School will serve our students and our community for at least 50 years.
