Inspired by Installation Artists, Maple Glen Students Prepare an Indoor Sculpture Garden
Maple Glen Elementary School's fifth-grade students are finding new uses for used objects and materials
Maple Glen Elementary School’s fifth-grade students are finding new uses for used objects and materials and creating an imaginative installation art project that will adorn the foyer of the school. The project was the idea of Art Teacher Steve Hopkins.
Hopkins was inspired by Installation artists and their use of found objects, recycled materials, and other mediums. In preparing the fifth graders for this project he exposed them to famous artists who are known for this style of work, including Andy Goldsworthy and Rachel Whitehead. The sculptures are being built using recycled newspapers and tape. Hopkins also discussed construction methods with his classes and explained how various sizes and shapes effect a structure’s strength.
When completed, the sculptures will vary in size and shape. The budding artists are limited only by their imaginations and the structure’s integrity.

“Student reaction to the project has been overwhelming,” said Hopkins. “The fifth graders have embraced the challenge and are even building during recess and bringing in sections that they have created at home.”
The project has had an impact on the entire student body. Students are enjoying watching the display come together. The sculptures engage students and teachers who have been overheard discussing the meaning of the pieces.
“Our students have demonstrated a great deal of commitment and creativity in putting the exhibit together,” said Maple Glen Principal Tim Bickhart, “I am very proud of what they are accomplishing.”
The project is a work in progress and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
