Maple Glen Elementary Students Engage in Quiet Reflection on September 11, 2015

UPPER DUBLIN, PA-- In memory of the tragedies of September 11, 2001, the students of Maple Glen Elementary School participated in a short but somber time of reflection.

Grades K-5 assembled on the pavement in front of the American flag at 8:50 AM. All of the students had been asked to wear patriotic attire in remembrance. Fifth-grade students Heath Bernstein and Ben Broker led their peers in the Pledge of Allegiance and remained standing for the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.

The event continued with the reciting of Otto Whittaker’s I am the Nation poem- each line recited by a different student.

Fifth-grade student Ben Broker concluded the event by posing a challenge to his peers. “We become great not because of who we are, but because of the way we act and what we do to help others,” he said.

At the end of the event, all students returned to their classrooms in silence.

“We’ve been proud Chipmunks,” said Principal Tim Bickhart, referring to the school mascot, “We’ve cheered, but there’s a time to be quiet. That’s important too. Today was such a time.”
