Montco Man Killed Son's Dog With Hammer: Report

"Animals, along with children, are some of the most defenseless in our community. And we have an obligation to ensure their well-being."

A Perkiomenville man killed his son’s 25-pound Cockapoo with a hammer when the dog allegedly bit him, according to a report.

Richard John Kleckner Sr. was taking care of the dog on October 27, 2014 while his son was away, the report states.

He said the dog bit down on his hand and would not let go, so he hit it will a hammer, according to the Daily Local News.

Kleckner said he did not realize he had killed the dog until it dropped to the floor, the report states.

Prosecutors said that Kleckner used excessive force, and was sentenced to two years probation and 48 hours community service, according to the report.

“Animals, along with children, are some of the most defenseless in our community,” Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Colgan said, according to the report. “And we have an obligation to ensure their safety and well-being,”
