Round-up: UDHS athletics comes away with very successful weekend

The girls basketball team picked up a pair of victories, and the boys basketball and wrestling teams each earned a "W."

The girls’ success began on Friday night at Upper Moreland, where Sarah Hallowell led the Lady Cardinals with 16 points on 6 for 10 shooting, including four for eight from beyond the arch, and added two steals and three offensive rebounds.

The Cardinal and Gray controlled the game from the opening quarter, going up 10-4 after the first, and never looked back in a 62-33 rout. Megan Deetscreek also had a stellar performance, earning a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The girls continued their winning ways the following day, earning a 70-50 victory against Chester at home. The pair of victories pushes the team’s record to 18-3, and the girls will take on Wissahickon at home tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in the final game of the regular season.

The boys basketball team also picked up a victory over Upper Moreland on Friday, but did it on the road. Forward Andrew Derr returned to the Cardinals’ line-up after being out with an injury, and he immediately had a positive impact on the team. Behind his hot shooting and strong all around play, the Cardinals cruised to a 67-44 victory.

The boys take the court against Wissahickon at 7 p.m. tomorrow in their final game of the regular season. A win sends them to the playoffs, a loss to the offseason.

The wrestling team rounded out a successful weekend by blowing out the Academy of the New Church, 69-0. The Cardinals benefited from many holes in the opposition’s line-up, as they received seven forfeits in the 14 weight classes. This means that by the time 135-pounder Jacob Haney had his hand raised after pinning his opponent in the first bout of the night, the Cardinals had already mathematically won.
