UD Sports: Softball Drops Springfield, 8-4

Led by Rachel Matricardi's four RBIs.

The Upper Dublin softball team moved to 1-1 on the year with an 8-4 defeat of Springfield Thursday afternoon, lead by left fielder Rachel Matricardi's four RBIs.

After Springfield opened a 2-0 lead in the first, the Lady Cardinals started slow, going scoreless for three until knocking in two runs in the fourth. Matricardi then padded the lead with a 3-run home run to left field in the fifth. Matricardi would add another RBI with a double in the 7th, part of a three-run inning that gave Upper Dublin the lead for good.

Starting pitcher Kristin Ganderton earned the win with a line of four earned runs on six hits in seven innings. Ganderton struck out three while walking none.

Center fielder Ashleigh Sharp also had a strong day offensively, going 3-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while first baseman Toni Hartman knocked in an RBI double.

Springfield was led offensively by pitcher Kim Machalette, who hit a two-run home run. However, Machalette took the loss, with a line of six earned runs on seven hits in seven innings. Machalette set down four Cardinals on strikes while walking one.

Upper Dublin will take to the field again Friday for a home matchup with Council Rock South.
