Udder Delight Starts Season, Brings New Changes

Spring is around the corner, and the Udder Delight ice cream shop is back with some new flavors and ideas.

Upper Dublin doesn't have a true "downtown" area. But that doesn't mean it lacks interesting businesses. Each week, we'll profile one local establishment and get the story on its business and owners. Know of a place with a good story? Tell us in the comments or e-mail Kyle@Patch.com.

March has arrived, bringing with it sunshine, warmer temperatures, hope for the spring, and of course, the re-opening of the Udder Delight Ice Cream Shop in Dreshertown Plaza.

Now in its third season of operation, Udder Delight owners Stephen Fine and Jon Kieserman are excited about opening back up, and they also have made quite a few additions to their store and menu.

The most noticeable change is a row of 14 plastic egg dispensers adorning the back wall of the shop, a new invention of Fine‘s that allows youngsters to insert a token, purchased for a dollar at the counter, to get toppings for their ice cream and a chance at a prize.

“The machines all have different candies in them, but interspersed in each machine are little treasure balls,” says Fine. “Those capsules have a prize, but also another token, so you still get your candy.”

Fine says that the idea came to him one day, and one would be hard-pressed to find a similar set up anywhere else.

“As a kid, I liked to interact with machines, so I thought about how I could come up with some kind of way for the kids to interact … and this just came to me when I was daydreaming one day,” Fine said. “It’s very unique. I don’t think you’ll find another ice cream place in the country that has it like this.”

In addition to the new machines, there are also a number of new items on the menu.

The first is a Jalapeno Chip flavor, which tastes true to its name, with bits of jalapeno mixed in with vanilla ice cream and chocolate flakes. Fine says the idea came from the Mexican tradition of drinking milk with spicy foods, which cools down the peppers and balances the flavors out.

Customers can also now find a chocolate espresso tea flavor, made by crushing up chocolate-covered espresso beans and mixing it in with the ice cream.

Udder Delight has also tweaked its menu to offer an option to more health- conscious or lactose-intolerant customers through its banana whip.

“We take fresh bananas, and run it through our machine … it comes out like a banana custard,” said Fine. “We add these different toppings to the banana, and it’s really good stuff: fat free, 100 percent natural.”

Udder Delight will now remain open through the rest of its business season, which runs through December.
