Upper Dublin Girls Hoops off to Hot Start

The team's defense has led them to victories in four of their first five.

The Upper Dublin girls basketball team is off to a hot start this season, compiling a 4-1 record through their first five games. The Lady Cards took home the championship trophy from the Upper Darby Tip-Off Tournament, defeating the St. Hubert Catholic School for Girls 43-28 and host Upper Darby 61-49.

The Lady Cardinals also picked up a victory over Lansdale Catholic, 53-38, before losing their first game at rival Cheltenham, 51-41. The girls rebounded with a 44-22 win over Upper Merion, and next take to the court on Thursday, Dec. 23 at home against Methacton. Head coach Vince Catanzaro won his 200th game this season.

“We made a couple of mental mistakes at the end and couldn’t make the shot when we needed a shot,” Upper Dublin coach Vince Catanzaro said. “That’s what it comes down to. You’ve got to make shots, and we didn’t.”

"Curtrena Goff scored 17 points while teammates Lauren Rothfeld and Taylor Bryant both added seven points to lead the Flying Cardinals. Cassidy Koenig – who connected on four treys – led the Vikings with 12 points.

The Flying Cardinals were sparked by their defense. Upper Dublin led 10-3 at the end of one quarter and took a 22-8 lead into halftime on their way to the win."
