Upper Dublin Wrestlers Open Season As New Hope Champions

The wrestling team opened the 2011-12 season with a bang on December 10, taking home the championship trophy from the annual New Hope-Solebury Individual wrestling tournament. The Cardinals finished first in a field of a dozen, just edging Haverford School by a team score of 204.5 to 203. Malvern Prep finished a distant third with 175 points.

The Cardinals earned the top trophy through a consistent team effort, with 12 of their 14 wrestlers finishing in the top four, including two champions. 138-pounder Steve Volovar earned a 9-2 decision over Malvern Prep's Mike Reagan to take his spot atop the podium, and 195-pounder Devon Dhoble pinned New Hope-Solebury's Chris Warden in 2:25 to sweep his bracket.

The Cardinals had six third place finishers in Aaron Katz at 106, Robert Chisar at 126, Derek Jones at 145, Jacob Haney at 152, Kyle Carson at 160 and Sam Jacobson at 170. Taking fourth were Brett Kunkel at 113, Brian Carson at 182, Yaroslav Tochinski at 220 and Yale Alpert at heavyweight.

The Cardinals next take to the mat on Wednesday, December 21 when they head to Chichester for a dual match.
