Wrestling: Cardinals Take Third at Lion Duals

On Saturday, January 7, the Upper Dublin wrestling team took part in the Lion Duals held at the Academy of the New Church, finishing in third place with a 3-2 record. While the wrestlers performed well, the team is hindered by having to forfeit the 113-pound weight class each match, giving opponents a free 6 points.

The team started off with a 43-29 win over William Penn Charter, led by pins by Drew Betteridge (138) and Brian Carson (182). The team then fell to Lawrenceville High (NJ), 39-30, in a close match that was only decided in the 2^nd to last bout.

The Cardinals rebounded with a 39-27 victory over Bishop McDevitt, with Betteridge again picking up a pin against his opponent, along with Steve Volovar (132), Jacob Haney (152) and Devon Dhoble (195) also recording falls. Upper Dublin would fall 42-28 to Lower Moreland, before earning a third place finish with a victory over Northeast High, 43-16. Haney, Kyle Carson (160), Brian Carson (182) Dhoble, Yaroslav Tochinski (220), Yale Alpert (285), Aaron Katz (106) and Ben Greenwood (120) would all pin for the Cardinals.

Going 5-0 for the Cardinals were Steve Volovar (3 falls), 145-pounder Derek Jones (3 major decisions) and Devon Dhoble (3 falls). Haney finished 4-1 with two falls.

The Cardinals return to action with a home match against Plymouth-Whitemarsh on Wednesday, then travel to Harriton High School for the Ram Duals on Saturday.
