A "Reel" Good Time Was Had By All

Cast away! Dozens readied their rods Saturday for the Family Fish Program at Apple Park in Fogelsville.

The bi-annual event is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

“We want to introduce people to fishing. It’s easier to learn when you do it together as a family. There’s also a better chance kids will stick to fishing if they do it with their parents,” says Andy Desko of the Pa. Fish and Boat Commission.

Fishing fanatics of all ages enjoyed a sunny Saturday morning soaking up Mother Nature.

“We wanted to do this for the community. It’s a family project so the youth and the adults can both enjoy it,” says Warren Hess of the Upper Macungie Recreation Board.

This slippery sport is one-of-a-kind. That’s why it caught the eye of organizers.

“Fishing is unlike any other sport. It’s hard for entire families to play football or baseball together because of the differences in age and size. Fishing is something everyone can do together,” says Jim Soltis, Upper Macungie Parks foreman.

Casting a line is less expensive than many other forms of leisure. A year-round fishing license in Pennsylvania is only $30…a “reel” good value.

“Fishing is really affordable. You’re only spending $30 per person for an entire year of entertainment. It costs much more than that to do most other things, like going to amusement parks or going on vacations,” added Desko.

“This program is free. It’s a nice, easy way for people to enjoy the parks,” Soltis said.

The Family Fish Program at Apple Park is held twice a year. The next event is August 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Fish and Game Commission also hold Free Fishing Days at all parks throughout the Keystone State. The next one takes place on Labor Day.
