Did You Get The Memo? Plan To See 'Horrible Bosses'

Superb performances by its all-star cast make a good film great.

Attention, fellow cube monkeys. Rejoice! There is a new “Office Space,” and it’s called “Horrible Bosses.”

Granted, there isn’t as much stapler- and memo-related humor in the latter, but it’s highly relatable and chock full of cringe-worthy head honcho behavior. Add humor that’s crass enough to keep the frat boys laughing but intelligent enough to appeal to the hipsters, and you’ve got yourself a summer blockbuster.

Our story centers around three amigos, played by Jason Bateman (Nick), Jason Sudeikis (Kurt) and Charlie Day (Dale), who have insufferable superiors. Back in the day – you know, like 2005 – one could just quit and find something new. But not in today’s economy, a small fact that helps make this film hit its mark.

And so? What’s a suffering employee to do? Why, plot a murder, of course. And so begins a kind of scavenger hunt that brings the boys from drug den to McMansion to thug-nation and back again.

The film is definitely in the tradition of “The Hangover” and “I Love You, Man,” meaning it’s goofy and relatively innocuous, but it also has hints of “CSI” and “Law and Order,” which not only help grab and hold your interest but also elevate it above your average bromance flick.

As funny as the three leads are – and they really are – the movie wouldn’t be what it is without an incredible supporting cast, which boasts equally comic and memorable actors.

As Nick’s egomaniacal, sadistic boss, Dave Harken, Kevin Spacey delivers an evocative performance that is both disturbing and brilliant.

And as assistant dentist Dale's boss, Dr. Julia Harris, Jennifer Aniston proves she can play with the big boys, having absolutely perfected her ability to fuse sexy with psychotic.

And let’s not forget Jamie Foxx, who plays an ex-convict named “mother-f&%$er” – yes, it’s exactly what you think – whom the boys meet while on their search for a hit man. Jamie, I love you.

All in all “Horrible Bosses” makes the day’s grind feel a little lighter, and for that, we say thank you.

Catch it at AMC Tilghman 8 in South Whitehall
