Grange Road Park Becomes More Than Soccer Fields

Call it a park in the making.

With 162 acres, is just beginning in as township officials map out a plan "that's slowly developed over time," Supervisor Kathy Rader said.

Phase One started in January with the construction of a pavilion, a building for restrooms and another for concession stands.

The park has been used for its soccer fields, but with the expansion, this summer it will also be featured for a community movie night.

"Grange Road Park was just a bunch of fields," Rader said. "Now we're consolidating it into one big regional park."

Last week, workers were busy putting the roof on the concession stands and finishing up the bathrooms.

Rader said the park's revitalization comes from the renewed recreation board, which had been disbanded but was revived two years ago.

"They're a great board," she said. "They come up with great programs and do all the legwork. We have 20,000 people and a lot of kids so there's always a need for fields. Having 162 acres is nice."

There are currently 10 parks with a few like Grange Road Park nearing final construction. These parklands comprise over 458 total acres and are located throughout Upper Macungie Township offering easy access from all ofour neighborhoods.

Jim Stolis, the township's parks team leader, said four parcels comprise Grange Road Park and that it used to be a tree farm and farmland.

Phase Two of the park will include a playground and tennis and basketball courts, he said.

And, eventually, the park will also have five baseball fields and a walking trail.
