Cats, dogs and more cats, oh my! It’s PetSmart’s National Adoption Weekend and it’s being held this Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1.
The goal is to find homes for more than 16,000 pets, and the Cat Shack of Trexlertown will once again be instrumental in the effort. Volunteers and a number of available cats from the Cat Shack will be at the Whitehall PetSmart, located at 2180 MacArthur Road, for the three-day event.
As the adoption partner occupying the adoption center at the Whitehall location since it opened in 2003, the Cat Shack has attended every National Adoption Weekend since that time, according to Theresa Clifford, co-founder of the Cat Shack. In addition to participating in this event, the Cat Shack maintains the adoption center at the Whitehall location on a daily basis with a staff of volunteers.

The quarterly event is held through PetSmart Charities, a division of PetSmart, with stores across the nation participating.
“National Adoption Weekend aims to bring greater awareness to the need for pet adoption, and to help end the euthanizing of animals,” said Loren Gillis, Whitehall’s store manager.

Sponsored by Purina Pro Plan and Tidy Cats, individuals adopting pets during this weekend will receive a free bag of pet food and coupons for pet products, training and grooming.
In addition to animals available through the Cat Shack, PetSmart opens their doors to other approved rescues for this event. As a result, a variety of dogs and cats of different breeds, ages and backgrounds will be available for adoption. Gillis suggests the largest selection of adoptable animals will be available either Friday evening, or Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“Approximately 50 pets were adopted at our store during National Adoption Weekend last quarter. We hope to exceed that number this weekend,” Gillis said.
Anyone interested in the event should visit www.petsmart.com or call the store at 610-437-7197.
The Cat Shack is always in need of additional dedicated volunteers to assist with their adoption efforts. For more information on how you can help, visit www.thecatshack.com.
