Parkland Honors Athletes at Ceremony

Outstanding Athletes, Scholar- Athletes, Letter-Winners in the spotlight during awards presentation.

The school’s fall, winter and spring sports teams and its outstanding senior athletes were recognized Wednesday during an athletic awards program at Parkland High School.

and were named as the Dale Zimmerman Athletes of the Year.

Ottinger also grabbed the award for Best Attack player for the boys’ soccer team and was recognized as the PIAA State Wrestling Champion in the 160-pound class.  Earlier this year, he defeated Minnesota state champion Destin McCauley during the Dapper Dan Classic at the University of Pittsburgh. McCauley had come into the tournament ranked No. 1 in the country in his weight class.

Hagenauer also was named Outstanding Player on the girls’ track and field team. She was this year’s District 11 champion in shot put and was also a sprinter on the team. During winter, she was a standout player for the Lady Trojans basketball team. Both Ottinger and Hagenauer were also named as Scholar Athletes.

Also named as Scholar Athletes were Austin Semmel and Kathleen Anthony, boys’ and girls’ cross country, respectively; Kurtis Kaunas, football and boys’ lacrosse; Ali Famili, boys’ soccer; Stephanie Goldberg, field hockey; Josiah Grimm, golf; Brett Lesavoy and Danielle Rosen, boys’ and girls’ tennis; Shaan Negandhi and Taylor Wejkszner, boys’ and girls’ volleyball; Matthew Kelley and Kathleen Anthony, boys’ and girls’ basketball; Kevin Wynosky and Kayla Grim, boys’ and girls’ swimming; Colleen Korp, cheerleading; Ben Breiner, baseball; Nicole Lawler, softball; Connor Tench, boys’ track; Julia Hulbert, girls’ soccer, and Victoria Buser, girls’ lacrosse.

Scholarship recipients were: Anthony Khoury, Trojan Alumni Club Marlyn Burkhardt Award; Jennifer Karlovits, Trojan Alumni Club Art Halderman Award; Doug Turrell, Jared E. Hass Memorial Award; Dan Combs and Julia Hulbert, Kyle Stang Memorial Award; Jarred Cury, Todd R. Roche Memorial Award; Kathleen Anthony, Patti Heffner Memorial Award; Matt Kelley, Scott Gollatz Memorial Award; Monica Hagenauer, Sandy Reilly Memorial Award, and Mike Ottinger and Kathleen Anthony, South Parkland Youth Association Richard Latham Memorial Award.

Receiving Coaches’ Awards were: Matt Guetzlaff and Kathleen Anthony, Cross-Country Coaches’ Award; Joey Grimm, Chris Tyson Golf Award; Dani Roth, Jean German Tennis Award, and Doug Turrell, Doug Kern Football Award.

Throughout the ceremony, each coach commented on one recurring theme: At meets, matches, games and tournaments, coaches and staff from other schools and organizations would remark about the exceptional sportsmanlike conduct of Parkland’s athletes and how well they represented the district, something, they said, the students --- and parents---should be proud of.  Many thanked parents for instilling that character trait in their children and said they were confident it would continue in the future

Earlier in the evening, the inducted the following: Taylor Wejkszner (2009 and 2010 All-State Volleyball Player); Stephanie Goldberg (2010 All-State Field Hockey Player); Ali Famili (2010 All-State Soccer Player); Duy Nguyen (2009 All-State Volleyball Player); Chris Busack (2009 All-State Volleyball Player); Matt Sundahl (2009 All-State Volleyball Player) Andy Buss (2010 All-State Volleyball Player); Chris Zumberge (2010 All-State Volleyball Player); Mike Ottinger (2011 State Wrestling Champion and All American).

Also inducted were Erin Anthony, (Class of 2007 Basketball and Volleyball player; 1088 career basketball points; 2007 Female Athlete of the Year; four-time All-Patriot League basketball player;  West Point (U.S. Military Academy) career totals: 1429, points, 1036 rebounds, 222 blocked shots; two-time Academic All-American, and 2011 Female Alumni recipient);  Dr Carl Marci (Class of 1987 Basketball and Track; PIAA State Medalist in the high jump; 1987 Male Athlete of the Year; Columbia University men’s track and field captain; Rhodes scholar, and 2011 Male Alumni recipient), and Chris Bleam (boys’ and girls’ soccer coach, 1989-2010:  517 wins, 152 losses, 29 ties;  12 District championships; 12  Conference championships, and 2010 NSCAA State and Regional Coach of the Year).
