Upper Macungie Olympian Competes in Tennis Today

Varvara Lepchenko competes in her second round of Olympic tennis in London this morning.

Upper Macungie Olympian competes in the second round of singles tennis today against Julia Goerges of Germany.

It will be the day's second match after 11:30 a.m. London time - about 8 a.m. here in the Lehigh Valley.

On Monday, Lepchenko defeated Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay.

Lepchenko, who has resided in South Whitehall but now lives in Upper Macungie, beat Cepede Royg in the third set of her first-round match. Lepchenko, who is making her Olympic debut in the 2012 games, beat Royg 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 in the first round.

NBC 10 reports that Lepchenko and Royg were unable to complete their match on Sunday due to darkness. Lepchenko quickly beat Royg Monday in a 29-minute final set, the report said.

The women's tennis portion of the Games began Saturday, July 28, and runs through Aug. 5.
