The Choristers Presents the Epic Oratorio -- Mendelssohn's ELIJAH!

Minimal staging, soloists & orchestra bring this dramatic Bibical story to life on Saturday, April 25, 2015!

On Saturday April 25, 2015 at 7:30 pm, one of the premier concert choirs in the Philadelphia suburbs, The Choristers, will present Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental ELIJAH. The 75-voice choir will be accompanied by a 41-piece professional orchestra under the direction of Founder and Artist Director David M. Spitko. Soloists include: Soprano Carole Latimer, Mezzo-Soprano Suzanne DuPlantis, Tenor Robert Chafin, and Bass-Baritone Justin Hopkins as Elijah.

ELIJAH is a work that borders on an opera in terms of dramaticisim. It tells the Biblical story of the Prophet Elijah who stood against the priests of Baal and challenged the people of Israel to turn from the false god, Baal, to worship the one true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The chorus sings the story about raising a child from the dead, bringing rain to drought-stricken Israel, and the bodily ascension of Elijah on a fiery chariot into heaven.

One of the most dramatic choruses is the contest of the false god Baal versus the one true God. After a failed sequence of increasingly frantic prayers by the prophets of the god Baal, the one true God consumes an offered sacrifice in a column of fire. Wait until you hear the music!

To heighten the action, Mendelssohn composed the music to have the soloists often times singing to each other and even to the choir. Alas, ELIJAH is virtually always performed with the soloists lined up in a row simply facing the audience. The Choristers will present the work uniquely.

A small stage has been built upon which the soloists will perform, interact, and connect with the person or people to whom they are singing. Three of the soloists have multiple roles. Each will wear a different stole to represent the different role being sung. The incredibly dramatic story that ELIJAH tells will come even more alive!
