Follow These Tips to Prevent the Spread of Enterovirus D68

There have been no confirmed cases of enterovirus D68 in Montgomery County.

County officials are offering tips to prevent the spread of a rare respiratory virus that has already been blamed for sickening hundreds of children.

Cases of enterovirus D68 have been confirmed throughout the Midwest, as well as in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Virginia, according to the CDC.

There have been no confirmed cases of the illness in Montgomery County, health officials have said.

EV-D68 can cause “mild to severe respiratory illness,” the CDC said, with symptoms that include fever, runny nose, sneezing, cough, body and muscle aches, difficulty breathing and wheezing.

Enteroviruses are spread person‐to‐person by coughing, sneezing or by touching infected persons or surfaces.

The Montgomery County Health Department has recommended residents take the following precautions to prevent the spread of colds and viruses: (including enteroviruses)

  • Wash hands frequently, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes, and remind kids to do the same.
  • Avoid sharing beverages, plates, bowls, utensils and other objects that may contact the hands, face or mouth.
  • Clean and disinfect commonly-touched surfaces, such as tables, chairs, countertops, toys, appliances, door handles and bathroom fixtures.
  • Monitor children, teens and adults for respiratory symptoms.
  • If symptoms occur, the individual should see a physician and stay away from school, day care, sporting events and other activities where proximity to others can spread the illness.

There is no treatment for EV-D68, the CDC said.
