Learning is fun at GSK Science in the Summer Day
- The Franklin Institute hosts 1,400 at third annual celebration

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Nothing cools down a hot August day quite like…liquid nitrogen! Over 1,400 students, volunteers and their families learned about this and more at last Saturday’s GSK Science in the Summer™ Day, hosted by The Franklin Institute.
On August 16, The Franklin Institute opened its doors in celebration of GSK Science in the Summer Day, offering free admission to program participants and affiliates. From 9:30am-5:00pm, participants were able to explore the newly expanded Franklin Institute, including the brand new Your Brain exhibit! Elementary students experienced the wonders of science, and put the lessons they learned through their courses to work.
Attendees were also shown an exclusive liquid nitrogen show presented by staff members of The Franklin Institute! Staff members used liquid nitrogen to freeze and break many objects, including flowers, balloons and balls. The show taught observers how liquid nitrogen changes the flexibility of different materials, and even included a “Dragon’s breath” demonstration using the -320°F substance! A few lucky members of the audience were able to assist in the demonstrations.
