Montco Commissioner Candidate Steve Tolbert Pledges Support for County-owned Camp Rainbow Inc.

Camp Rainbow Inc. provides a week-long camping experience to hundreds of Montgomery County children each summer.

During a recent visit to Montgomery County owned Camp Rainbow Inc., County Commissioner candidate Steve Tolbert noticed some areas in need of upgrades: “Significantly aging” housing facilities, a shredded basketball net, a kitchen and dining area that could use a makeover and a much-needed washing machine, among other capital improvement projects.

Many of the items seem minor in nature. But, considering that Montgomery County has, for the last few years, eliminated the $50,000 in annual funding the camp had received previously, every penny counts.

The nonprofit camp operates on a shoestring budget of roughly $160,000, yet still opens its doors wide to all Montgomery County children ages 7-16 who are interested in attending the weeklong overnight camping sessions. In many cases, the camp, through its own fundraising, subsidizes the $267-per-week cost for each camper.

“We will never turn a child away,” Camp Director Alex Fizz said.

As the father of a young child, Tolbert said he was moved to support the summer camp, which is located on 18 acres along the Perkiomen Creek.

“I don’t make a lot of pledges,” Tolbert said. “There is absolutely a need for that camp to receive county support.”

Tolbert, during his visit, interacted with about 20 of the campers. He saw firsthand the experience that the great outdoors provides for kids who may otherwise not be able to afford such an opportunity and recognized that, in addition to having a good time and making new friends, campers learn discipline and are mentored by camp counselors.

The West Norriton resident, who currently serves as a township commissioner, said he was impressed so much with the camp that he plans to return later this summer with his 8-year-old daughter.
