Montgomery County Student 'Grows' Arboreal Eagle Scout Project

Spring-Ford Area School District freshman, Shawn Horwatt, is “growing” a great Eagle Scout project for his community. Last year, Horwatt contacted Brooke Elementary School principal Mary Pat Long with a unique idea for his Eagle Scout project. Horwatt wanted to plant trees across Brooke’s campus, and distribute free trees to Brooke families, staff and friends.

“He wanted to do something for our school and our families that could potentially last a lifetime,” said Long. “He is not just contributing to our school, he’s contributing to our families. A kindergarten parent can plant their tree at home, and watch it grow along with their family. Imagine, they could take a last day of kindergarten picture under the tree, and a high school graduation picture there 12 years later!”

Horwatt secured trees from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. The organization will be donating 188 6-8 feet tall trees. Tree species include Sugar Maple, Tulip Poplar, Swamp White Oak, Willow Oak, Red Oak, Red Maple, River Birch, Sweet Gum, Black Gum, American Hornbeam, Redbud and Sweetbay Magnolia. Recipients will also watch a tree care demonstration prior to picking up their tree.

Trees will be distributed to families on Saturday, October 3. Predetermined pickup times will be sent to recipients.
