As Temperatures Plunge, 'Code Blue' Declared in Montgomery County

Single-digit lows and wind chills near or below zero are expected in Montgomery County this week.

Montgomery County has declared a Code Blue Cold Weather Emergency starting at 6 p.m. Monday and going through 9 a.m. Friday.

A Code Blue Cold Weather Declaration means winter conditions pose a threat of serious harm or death to people without shelter. A Code Blue is called when the combination of air temperature and wind chill is anticipated to be 20 degrees or less, according to the county.

Some of the season’s coldest temperatures are on their way to the area and will bring single-digit lows and wind chills near or below zero.

The low Monday night is expected to be in the teens, according to the Weather Channel. On Tuesday, temperatures will dip below freezing during the day with highs in the mid-20s expected in Montgomery County. There is a chance of some light snow that day, with the Weather Channel predicting accumulation of about an inch locally.

Wednesday’s high is expected to be in the mid-20s. The low that day will be in the single digits, according to forecasters. Thursday’s high is likely going to hover around 20 degrees, with a low in the mid-teens, according to the Weather Channel.

The National Weather Service, which has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the region, said the combination of brisk winds and “very cold” temperatures will produce wind chills near or below zero on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
