Upper Moreland Senior Named Student Of The Month

The Eastern Center for Arts and Technology in Willow Grove recognized Nicole Hertzel on Monday.

Nicole Hetzel was named the June 2015 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology in Willow Grove, according to statement from the school.

She is in EASTERN’s Commercial Art program and a senior at Upper Moreland High School.

The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN’s faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

As a sophomore at Upper Moreland High School, Nicole’s sister was interning in the guidance department at Upper Moreland and had recently visited EASTERN. Knowing Nicole’s love for art, she suggested that Nicole visit the Commercial Art program.

At EASTERN, Nicole has been very successful in SkillsUSA competitions. SkillsUSA is EASTERN’s student leadership organization, and is also a national organization promoting good citizenship, student leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and recognizes student achievement and excellence.

As a junior, she received first place for the SkillsUSA Pin Design presentation at the State competition, and went on to place twelfth in the National competition.

She was chosen to take the lead on many school projects that required layout and artwork– such as EASTERN’s 2015 Open House Ad Book. At EASTERN’s Awards Night in May 2014, Nicole was honored with Perfect Attendance and Straight A awards.

At Upper Moreland, she is the co-editor of the high school yearbook, a member of the National Honor Society,
and the Quiz Bowl team. She has participated in musicals at both the high school and at Summer Arts Camp.

“Nicole has an eye for detail and a passion for digital arts,” said Nicole Mohrey, EASTERN’s Commercial Art
Instructor. “Her maturity and professionalism are remarkable. She has set some incredible goals for herself and I
have no doubt she will achieve them.”

After graduation from Upper Moreland High School and EASTERN, Nicole will attend Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY majoring in Digital Arts with a focus on 2-D Animation. Her dream is to obtain an internship with
Marvel while in college.

Ultimately, Nicole would like to work full time in animation and as a freelance illustrator.
