UPPER MORELAND, PA — A vigil meant to address school violence has been scheduled to take place in the community Thursday evening.

The event, slated for 8 p.m. Thursday at the Upper Moreland High School, was organized by the Equity Alliance For Upper Moreland, which says it partners with the township and school district to "support diversity, recognize inequity, and enhance safety and inclusivity in our community," according to its Facebook page.

The vigil was organized to "support our students and speak out against the violence plaguing our schools," according to an event description.

According to organizers, those who will participate in the vigil include Kate Ahern, community education specialist at the Women's Center of Montgomery County, and Derrick Schmidt, a community advocate with the Victim Service Center of Montgomery County.

Ahern is expected to share information on how her organization can help provide support to victims of violence and Schmidt is scheduled to share information about the Victim Service Center, which offers services and support to survivors of violence, their family members and their friends.

The vigil is scheduled to take place in front of the Upper Moreland High School across from the school district administration building.

The event comes on the heels of a recent report where a young teenager was allegedly raped in a bathroom at the local high school.

Other area school districts have also been dealing with their share of problems in recent time, such as Hatboro-Horsham, where threats recently caused an early-dismissal at the high school, and where fights recently broke out that reportedly resulted in staff being injured.
