WEATHER UPDATE: 10 Inches or More, 'Near Whiteout' Conditions, Refreeze Expected

Snow was heavy at times throughout the day Thursday, falling as fast as two inches per hour at some periods, according to forecasters.

More than 10 inches of snow fell throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties Thursday, as a winter storm caused hazardous travel and prompted numerous closures and cancellations.

Heavy snowfall taped off throughout much of the region by early evening but light snow was expected to follow, according to forecasters.

Pennsylvania State Police reported near whiteout conditions on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, NBC10 said.

Driving conditions aren’t likely to improve right away. Temperatures are expected to drop to single digits overnight, which could cause dangerous driving conditions on roadways that refreeze, PennDOT said.

PennDOT said it plans to deploy trucks throughout the night in the Philadelphia region to plow and apply deicing materials.

Snow accumulations early in the evening proved the storm would be the most substantial of the season, according to early tallies by the National Weather Service. Here are a few examples:

  • Nearly 9 inches fell in Lower Bucks County by 5:15 p.m.
  • In Abington, 8 inches of accumulation was recorded by 4:15 p.m.
  • King of Prussia recorded nearly 10.5 inches of snow as of 5:45 p.m.
  • About 8.5 inches fell in Philadelphia by 4:40 p.m.

Thursday night: Snow ends, skies will clear overnight. It will get cold, with lows in the single digits

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 26. Wind chill values as low as -5.

Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 8.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 35.

Saturday night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.
