Willow Grove GIANT announces nutritionist class schedule for May

Nutrition tips and more with Mary Ann Moylan, RD, LDN, CDE

Mary Ann Moylan, RD, LDN, CDE, in-store nutritionist at the Willow Grove GIANT Food Store announces the May schedule of classes. Classes meet within the Willow Grove GIANT at 315 York Road. Most of these classes are free, but registration is required by calling 215-784-1960.

The May schedule of classes includes:

Diabetes care class, Thursday, May 4, 1 – 2 p.m.

Join your specially trained pharmacist and nutritionist for practical tips on managing diabetes and pre-diabetes. Registration is required for this class; stop by the pharmacy for details.

“Cookin’ with the Docs” in partnership with Abington – Jefferson Health: Heart healthy summertime cooking, Thursday, May 4, 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Meets in the Cooking School; $15 per person; Adults; Registration required

Join Dr. Richard A. Goldstein, MD, cardiologist from Abington Hospital, and Mary Ann, along with Chef Dan, to learn some heart healthy summertime cooking techniques. Then, sample some of these delicious heart healthy foods in our Cooking School. Some new low cholesterol, low sodium products from the Willow Grove GIANT will also be sampled.

Managing celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, Thursday, May 11, 1 – 2 p.m.

Meets in the Cooking School; Free; Adults; Registration required

Do you have bloating, stomach pains or gas after eating wheat or gluten? Do you think you have a “wheat belly”? Or do you have celiac disease or a sensitivity to gluten? In this class, we’ll learn how a nutritionist differentiates between these complicated and often overlapping conditions. Then, we’ll sample new gluten-free foods in our Cooking School and go on a gluten-free store tour.

Improving cognitive vitality, Thursday, May 18, 1 – 2 p.m.

Do certain dietary patterns contribute to our brain health? How can we keep mentally sharp as we age? Come hear Mary Ann discuss how certain foods and mal plans will enhance your cognitive function and lead to a healthier lifestyle. Sample some of these delicious and nutritious foods in our Cooking School, then go on a store tour.

Let’s have a vegetarian picnic, Thursday, May 25, 1- 2 p.m.

Meets in the Cooking School; Free; Adults; Registration required

What should we have for our vegetarian picnic? Which veggie burgers are most nutritious? What about vegan potato salad or pasta salad? And, we shouldn’t forget our fresh fruits and fresh veggies or some healthy vegetarian desserts. Sample some of these foods in our Cooking School and go on a vegetarian store tour.

In addition, if you need help losing weight or managing a health condition or food allergy, you can also schedule an individual consultation with Mary Ann. Individual consultations are $20 and participants receive back a $20 GIANT gift card upon completion.
