Jacobs Music Company and Steinway & Sons with a Store in Willow Grove

When an event as momentous as the arrival of Pope Frances and the World Meeting of Families comes to Philadelphia, only the best in every aspect of the celebration will be appropriate. So, the organizers of the Papal visit in Philadelphia made the decision that Steinway pianos would be required for the religious and festival events. And, to accommodate the request, they turned to Jacobs Music Company, Steinway’s exclusive representative in the Delaware Valley, who decided to provide the instruments, delivery and technical services at no charge.

On Saturday, September 19, Jacobs received the call that the Archdiocese would need a piano for the stage for the Papal Mass and weekend performances. There will be a Steinway Model D 9’ Concert Grand on stage for the Saturday performances as well as one with the Philadelphia Orchestra for
the Papal Mass on Sunday.

Robert Rinaldi, Vice President of Jacobs Music said, “We only found out about the Steinway Concert Grand request for the Parkway events on the Saturday before the Pope is to arrive, so needless to
say, we’re moving very quickly to be of service to the World Meeting of Families and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which has placed their trust in Jacobs Music Company. This is going to be a challenge for our movers, B&N Piano Movers, with delivery, set-up, and our technicians tuning the piano, but
we will make it happen. “

Originally, Jacobs Music got the call in June from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to discuss the possibility of supplying pianos for the choir rehearsals that were to be starting in July and ongoing until the visit of Pope Francis. At that time Robert Rinaldi and Sonja Lynne, Manager of the House of Worship Department at Jacobs Music, visited the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul to do a site visit.

There were to be two choirs, which would later combine to be a 500 voice choir. They needed
the highest quality piano for the sanctuary which would also serve as rehearsal space for one of the choirs. Their first choice was Steinway so Jacobs provided a Steinway Model B 7’ grand piano. The second choir was to rehearse in the Cathedral’s basement. Upon seeing the basement piano, Jacobs also offered a second piano, Steinway’s Boston Grand Piano for the basement rehearsals. Because the rehearsals were several times a week, Jacobs also tuned the pianos every week during the time they had the pianos, which was over two months.
