Legislation was introduced in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives last week that would get state government out of the liquor business by turning it over to the private sector.
Under House Bill 790, the Liquor Control Board would auction 1,200 liquor licenses to supermarkets, convenience stores, pharmacies and big box stores to create greater consumer convenience and choice. The license sale is projected to raise more than $1 billion in revenue, which Gov. Tom Corbett wants to spend on our public schools.
House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R-Allegheny) expects a vote on the bill before the end of March.
