Liquor Privatization Bill on House Agenda

Debate on privatizing wine and liquor sales in Pennsylvania is expected to dominate the House in the week ahead. House Bill 790 is scheduled to come before the House Liquor Control Committee on Monday and will likely be considered by the full House on Wednesday. The legislation would provide consumers with greater choice and convenience and result in a billion dollar windfall for the state.

Also on Monday, the House Liquor Control Committee is scheduled to vote on my legislation (House Bill 556) that would allow any Pennsylvania college or university to obtain a wine auction permit.

Last week in the House, we unanimously passed two bills in our continuing effort to strengthen Pennsylvania’s child protection laws. House Bill 321 would increase penalties for child pornography offenders based upon the age of the child, the number of images possessed, and the nature and character of the abuse. House Bill 89 would fund state grants for Child Advocacy Centers, which provide a comprehensive treatment program for abused kids. There are only 21 such centers currently operating in Pennsylvania. The bills now head to the Senate for consideration.

Also last week, the House passed legislation that would make more certified hunter education classes available to students and citizens. House Bill 126 would require every school district to provide a classroom to the Pennsylvania Game Commission for conducting free hunter education courses. The aim of the legislation is to increase interest and participation in the sport of hunting in the Commonwealth. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
