May 18th the Lehigh Valley Chess Club will host its 1st May “Scholarship” Chess Championship event for students in the K-12 grades category. There will be $1000.00 in Scholarships, 11 trophies, and every participant wins a door prize as the prospective winners compete for top honors in a typically enthusiastic field of players. The chess club holds regularly scheduled Friday Night (St
Timothy’s Lutheran Church, 140 So. Ott St., Allentown, Pa, 6:30 pm) and Saturday (Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, Pa, 1 pm) events weekly throughout the year at those two locations. All rated chess games are process
though the US Chess Federation (USCF), of which the club is an affiliate, to provide local players with a National ranking.
This past weekend, 22 players of all ages competed for prizes at the club and to improve their game and demonstrate the qualities of good sportsmanship in competitive chess. The winners from Saturday, Feb 9, 2013 were Section 5 (beginner and novice level), 1st - Alex Adams (Bethlehem) who scored 3 – 0; Section 4, Tied for 1st – Ed Letscher (Nazareth) and Jerry Law (Allentown) who both scored 2 - 1 each; Section 3, 1st - Marcus Mooren (Allentown) who scored 3 – 0; Section 2, 1st Samuel Li (Bethlehem) who scored 2 – 1; Section 1 (Advanced players), 4 - way tie for 1st between Ken Horan(Philadelphia), Christian Wadsworth (Orefield), Jason Law(Allentown) and Joshua Goldin (Allentown). The club welcomed Luke King and Alex Adams as the latest addition of USCF and club players to our chess family here in the Lehigh Valley. Special thanks went out to Tom and Annette Hickey for donating the free pizza for all the players at our monthly “Surprise Pizza Day” at the club Saturday.

The Lehigh Valley Chess Club will only be open on both
Friday Night, Feb 15 and 22 this month, at 6:30 pm for (2) blitz chess events (7-9 pm and 9-11 pm). All players must obtain a USCF membership to play and be rated in any club event and are available on site through the tournament
director. On Saturday, Feb 16, the club will be closed for the President’s Day Holiday and to allow club players to participate in the 43rd Annual World Amateur Team and US Team East Chess Championships in Parsippany, NJ. Last year, 249 4-man teams competed there at that tournament site alone for top honors. The Saturday club will meet again next on Feb 23rd at 1 pm at Holy Trinity Church.

Championship, March 23), and at Pocono Mountain East High School, Swiftwater, Pa (The Pocono Spring Challenge K-12 Scholastic, May 4).
