This Week in Harrisburg

Members of the House Appropriations Committee this week advanced a $28.3 billion budget proposal for the 2013-14 fiscal year. The budget priorities outlined in House Bill 1437 include education, public safety, health and human services, and the environment. The budget bill is scheduled for consideration by the full House next week. We have until June 30 to adopt a final budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

This week, the House also unanimously approved a measure to help veterans who plan to take college courses. House Bill 1164 would allow veterans to receive priority when scheduling courses so they can receive the necessary education to rejoin the workforce.

In addition, the House unanimously passed a bill to help ensure qualified Pennsylvanians receive unemployment compensation payments in a timely manner. House Bill 26 would divert a portion of employee unemployment compensation taxes to be deposited into a newly established fund in order to improve the quality and efficiency of services provided by unemployment compensation centers.
