Road trips are the best quick escape. For the day, you can escape the drone of your day-to-day routine, turn on the radio, and explore a new part of your state or hometown. Road trips allow you to become a traveler in your own country – and for the traveler on a budget, a time constraint, or even the person just seeking a quick adventure – a road trip truly is the best way to see something new and get away. Luckily, Boston is a prime place for any road tripper, due to its close proximity to so many great sites. For a quick and close road trip, there are a multitude of off-the-beaten-path stops. Here is our list of the top 5 Boston Area road trip destinations, so the next time you need a quick escape, you can turn on the ignition and drive away to your next vacation for the day.

 

1. Cape Cod – The quintessential New England experience: lobster dinner, swimming along the capes, and biking on the beach. With more than enough to offer for a day’s worth of activities, the Cape is a great day-trip destination and is approximately one to two hours from the heart of Boston, depending on where in the Cape you decide to go.

2. , Rhode Island – Newport is about an hour and a half from Boston, and has many old-fashioned mansions that were the homes to many famous and wealthy American families, such as the Vanderbilts. Take the drive up and tour the mansions, and then stroll through the town during the rest of the day.

3. Dinosaur Dome Park, Rocky Hill, CT – Just a short drive from Boston is one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America. This park opened in 1968, two years after excavators happened upon 2,000 dinosaur tracks while building a new state building. The 200 million year old Jurassic fossils are an incredible sight for the entire family, and are sure to make a trip that you will never forget.

 

4. Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory and Gardens, South Deerfield, MA – This incredible garden of flight is a magnificent sight. The 18,000 square foot glass conservatory is filled with tropical vegetation, butterflies, moths, and a heart-shaped pond with Japanese koi and a towering waterfall.

 

5. Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, Springfield, MA – This sculpture garden is free and open to the public. Based on the works of the creative genius, Dr. Suess’ lovable and whimsical characters inspired the bronze sculptures and walking through the park is a fun-filled day activity for any family. There is also an exhibition that tells the story of Dr. Suess’ life, as well as a play area for children. After touring the gardens, enjoy the city of Springfield while in town.
