Week Two of House Budget Hearings

The House Appropriations Committee continued budget hearings last week with state agencies presenting testimony about the governor’s spending proposal. The committee heard from PennDOT, the Department of Education, the state-related universities, the state retirement systems and the Liquor Control Board, among others.

The state-related universities, Penn State, Pitt, Temple and Lincoln, would be level funded under the governor’s plan. During their testimony, the schools’ presidents emphasized they would try to keep tuition increases to a minimum for students.

The Liquor Control Board discussed its plans to enhance revenues and modernize all 605 state stores by 2020. The governor aims to privatize the sale of wine and spirits as part of his budget proposal, and the board gave assurances it would work with the General Assembly in moving forward with an agreement.
