When I help my clients create filing systems to hold paperwork that they previously stored in boxes, on desk surfaces, and in drawers, I realize how important a filing system is in a household. Ideally, files can reduce clutter and help you easily retrieve needed paperwork.
The key to a great filing system is a sturdy, accessible place with enough room for what you have to store. Clients and I often pick filing cabinets with wheels that can be moved near the bill-paying desk and then back into a corner. You can also simply use a drawer that holds a metal hanging folder rack. Buying enough hanging folder racks and manila folders to go in them is easy if you make a list of the how many files you would like to make.
You decide how detailed to make your filing system. Some people use one folder for "utilities" which may hold water, sewer, electric and cable bills. Other people chose to separate those items into individual folders. Your insurance section may hold individual folders for each type of insurance such as "home owners", "life", and "car". Each member of the family may have a folder in the section labeled "Medical" or "Dental". You will know as you start to use your system whether it makes sense and is easy to remember. Yes, I own a label maker but do not use it on my files. If I need to make a new tab, there is no worrying about making it perfect with a label or procrastinating until I buy new label tape. I just write a new tab by hand.

Most crucial is designing a system that you will remember and use. If you do not feel motivated to place items back into the folders because the system is too confusing, make it more simple. Remember to purge what you have accumulated but no longer need. Some people only keep one utility bill and shred the others. Some may keep several bills of each type. Some keep a year's worth of pay stubs while others keep one month's worth. You design your system and then periodically empty what you do not need.
Enjoy the peace that comes from closing the drawer and having no more piles on your desk!
