A three step process for making school work this year. Dream Big, Make a Plan and Do It

How as school been so far? Have you made a plan for success? I hope you have, because the first step in any endeavor is to “begin with the end in mind” - one of Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly effective People -  and school is no different. You need three things when you want to make school a success this year: Have a dream, make a plan and then do it.

Have a Dream - Dreaming big is easy, anyone can do it. And you should. What do you want to be doing in 10 years? Don’t sell yourself short, set you sights as high as you want. You may not know exactly what you want to be doing in 10 years, but remember, what you do today (in school) will pave the way for your dream to become a reality. Put the work in now to be able to do anything in the future.

Make a plan and be ready for the detours the school year can bring. What do you want from school? Decide now, early in the year, and write it down. Some goals I have heard from students:

  • I want to get an A
  • I want to pass this class and learn enough to take AP Biology next year.
  • I want to make it through school smoothly and without a lot of drama
  • I want to go to Penn State

Whatever yours is, as the school year progresses, keep that vision in your mind and refer to it often. There is nothing wrong with adjusting your goal a little along the way. That is part of the journey - having a clear goal, but making minor corrections along the way as detours show up.

Your classroom has a plan; Do you understand what the teacher expects of you? Do you know what is expected in each of your classes? You teacher probably handed out a syllabus for the year. Make sure you read it and understand what your teachers expect from you this year. Things you should look for in the syllabus

  • Frequency and importance of homework
  • Do tests questions come from the textbook or are they standardized?
  • How often are tests and quizzes?
  • Is participation an important part of the grade? (in the classes I teach, participation is very important)

Finally,  go (and as Nike says) Do It!

Did you make a plan? Are you ready to make school a success? Let’s hope so, and Good Luck…
