Candidate Says He Didn't Change Parties to Run in Upper Saucon Race

Gerard Anthony says he didn't register as a Republican because he planned to run in the Upper Saucon Township supervisor race.

A candidate for Upper Saucon Township supervisor is responding to questions about his voter registration.

A Patch questionnaire sent to the supervisor candidates asked if they changed parties to run in the township race. Gerard Anthony replied "no." A Patch reader on Wednesday sent Patch a computer scan of a document from Lehigh County Voter Registration showing Anthony registered as a Republican in February.

Patch contacted Anthony and here is his reply:

"I did not change parties to run, it is something I just put off and off and off.  So now was the incentive to make the change official.  I had been voting along Republican lines for several years now."

Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 800 among the township's registered voters, according to Lehigh County Voter Registration. There are 4,420 voters registered as Republicans and 3,582 Democrats.

Anthony is one of three men running for one open seat on the towship board of supervisors.

The other candidates are Philip Spaeth and Joe Rizzutto. Doris A. Clegg also appears on the ballot but says she has dropped out of the race in favor of Anthony.
