Emergency Preparedness Special Report: Floods

A special report from Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Mike Zweifel

As we have found out in recent weeks, even a very small stream or dry creek bed can overflow and create flooding.  What can you do to prepare yourself and your family?

As in all emergency preparedness;

         1a.  Have a supply kit consisting of non-perishable food, water, battery or crank radio and flashlights.  You should also keep in a water sealed bag or container copies of medications and medical supplies, social security card, insurance policies, wills, driver’s license etc., blankets, weather radio, and any other items to make an emergency life-saving and comfortable.  You should also keep a kit in each vehicle.

         1b.  If you’re in your home, have construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering.  Do you have sump pumps?  Check to see if they are operating.  A generator back up would be feasible.  Move items in possible flood areas to a higher floor.

         2. Have a family emergency plan.  How will you all contact each other in an emergency?  Plan a place to meet within and outside of your neighborhood in case you are separated.  Inquire about emergency plans at places where you work, a daycare, and school if needed.  Make plans for your pets.  Review your flood insurance plan if you have one or look into purchasing such a plan.  Most home policies do not include this in their plan.

         3. When watching TV, listening to the radio or even your weather radio, know special terms such as:  Flood watch – flooding is possible, Flash flood watch – flash flooding is possible, be prepared to move to a higher ground, Flood warning – flooding is either occurring or will occur soon, Flash flood warning – it is occurring, seek higher ground preferably on foot immediately.

The bottom line is be prepared, stay informed and stay safe!
