Solehi Girls B-Ball Takes Time to Give Back for Autism
Girls Basketball team raises funds for local Autism Chapter
Inspired by the stories of several families dealing with Autism, the girls basketball team rallied around the cause to organize a fundraiser for the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Autism Society, which is headquartered in . The event included numerous fundraising efforts, including drawings for gift baskets, raffles and the opportunity to compete for other prizes.
According to the Chapter, one in every 110 births is affected by Autism. Because it affects every individual differently, dealing with Autism can be very challenging and unpredictable for the affected families. Community events such as this fundraiser not only provide a valuable means of financial support, but also clearly show the level of community support that exists for this complex problem.
The team took on Central Catholic, playing in a packed gym. The Central Catholic girls and fans also participated in the fundraising efforts, insuring the financial success of the event. Although the fundraising went very well, the game did not go as well for the Spartan girls, who lost the game 54-37. The Vikettes were strong and tall under the basket, making penetration into the paint very difficult for the Spartan women. Foul trouble benched Senior stand-out Bridgette Dougherty for much of the second half and although other players including Sophomore Brianna Prince sought to compete under the boards, the Vikettes won most rebounds, allowing them to control the game.
