Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest Ranked Among Nation's Top Hospitals

Lehigh Valley-Cedar Crest ranked among top 140 nationwide and first in region, followed by Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg and St. Luke's, according to U.S. News & World Report

For the 16th year in a row, has made it to U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-2012 Best Hospitals list

The hospital was ranked among the top 140 hospitals in three categories: 

> and (No. 40). The hospital has a specific center for diabetes treatment, the Helwig Health & Diabetes Center, which emphasizes patient education and self-management, said Ronald W. Swinfard, M.D., Lehigh Valley Health Network president and CEO.

> Gastroenterology (No. 48). “We have several groups that practice gastroenterology within our network, and they do an excellent job in patient care,” said Swinfard. Specialized techniques include endoscopic ultrasound to define irregularities.

> Geriatrics (No. 47). Swinfard cited geriatrics division chief Catherine M. Glew, M.D. and the hospital’s Level 1 trauma center’s care for older adults. “Whenever an older patient comes into our trauma center, they have a mandatory consultation with a specialist for the aged,” said Swinfard.

In addition to the Best Hospitals rankings, Lehigh Valley Hospital—Cedar Crest was noted as a high performer in nine areas: cancer care; cardiology and heart surgery; ear, nose and throat; gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology, and urology. 

A second location of the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Lehigh Valley Hospital—Muhlenberg was listed as a high performer in seven categories -- diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology. 

The two hospitals were ranked first and second “best performing” hospitals in the Allentown/Lehigh Valley region. 

St. Luke’s Hospital and Health Network, Bethlehem, was ranked third in the region, and was rated as a high-performing hospital in gastroenterology, geriatrics, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, pulmonology and urology. 

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, was ranked No. 10 on the U.S. News Report’s Best Hospitals Honor roll of the top 17 medical centers that show high expertise in multiple specialties. 

New Jersey had no major metropolitan areas with ranked hospitals, according to the report.
