Lower Milford Advertises 2012 Budget

Township approves budget advertisement and opposes increasing truck weight to 100,000lbs on the Interstate.

The approved advertisement of the 2012 budget, a letter of opposition to U.S. House and Senate Bills increasing trucking weight, and discussed advertising for a new tax collector.

Supervisors voted to advertise the 2012 budget in preparation for a final vote. The advertisement was passed with two recommendations. The budget will include a $7,500 grant from Lehigh County for the and a $12,000 expense to the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System.

The expense comes from a change in Saucon Creek water quality, where Lower Milford discharges its water, to a high quality standard. The Township will have to pay a permit fee of $5,000 with other costs around $7,000.

Lower Milford maintains a 2 mills real estate tax for the general fund and 1 mill fire tax. “Its pretty much the same,” said Township Manager Ellen Koplin with the exception of the two recommendations.

The Board approved a letter to Rep. Doug Reichley and Senator Pat Casey opposing House Resolution 763 and Senate Bills 747 and 1450. The bills would increase the maximum weight of semi-tractor trailers from 80,000lbs to 100,000lbs traveling on the interstate system.

Supervisors claimed that the added weight from trucks traveling through Lower Milford would take a toll on its infrastructure. “It kills our roads and kills our bridges,” said Supervisor Donna Wright.

Supervisor William Roy contested that bedrock underneath Lower Milford's roads would not handle the increased weight. He added that hills and site distance on the Township's roads make it hazardous for trucks carrying that heavy a load. “It would be counterproductive to our residents,” said Roy.

In other business, Wright announced the resignation of Tax Collector Robert Myers. Myers will be leaving the area and the Township requires the Tax Collector live in Lower Milford.

The Board is looking for letters of interest for the position. The Board would appoint someone for the remaining term. The Township Tax Collector is an elected position and would be required to run after serving the remainder.

“They need to have a background in accounting, bookkeeping, and be personable,” said Koplin.
