NeighborFest Ready to Roll at UST Community Park

Annual event will feature family and pet entertainment, and a 9/11 memorial remembrance.

NeighborFest 2011 at Upper Saucon Township Community Park is ready to go, said Tracy Roman, vice chairwoman for the Parks and Recreation Commission during the recent township supervisors meeting.

Roman said NeighborFest was originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10. However, local Saturday sports and volunteer scheduling conflicts forced the commission to move the event to Sept. 11. A 9/11 memorial remembrance will be part of the event.

The event will host nature-based programs geared especially toward young children and teenagers. Under the NeighborFest tent, environmental group Wildlands Conservancy will host a presentation on unique local critters. Author Kathy Miller will showcase her book “Chippy Chipmunk Parties in the Garden.” Miller also will present a hands-on chipmunk burrow construction activity, as well as sign books for her readers.

Local puppeteer Mark Keeler will put on two shows of “The Yippee Show” for children of all ages. Additional entertainment for the kids will include Moon Bounces, a Rock Wall and a Trackless Train. Music will be provided by DJ Joe Tocci and rockabilly/honky tonk band the Ultra Kings.

Also at the park, the Friendly Dog Walk will take place for visitors to walk their dogs on the Saucon Rail Trail. Registration for the walk is between 11:30am and noon. Dog owners can also preregister to receive a free treat bag by emailing their names and number of dogs to dogwalk@uppersaucon.org. The dog walk is sponsored by Critter Corral.

“I also have, as of now, seven confirmed dog vendors and animal rescue groups,” Roman said. “This should be a dog-friendly, kid-friendly event this year.”

The Southern Lehigh Public Library will host a used-book sale during NeighborFest, in particular selling dog-related books and items. Food and snacks will be provided by local restaurants and service agencies. Also appearing will be Southern Lehigh sports teams and the township fire and police departments.

Roman also stated a 9/11 memorial remembrance will take place at 2pm. A moment of silence also will be observed.
