Volunteers needed for the sixth annual series of volunteer pulling parties at Lake Towhee to control the invasive aquatic plant water chestnut (Trapa natans) hosted by the Bucks County Conservation District, Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and Keep Bucks Beautiful in collaboration with Nockamixon State Park and Bucks County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Water chestnut's aggressive spread is threatening the health of the Tohickon Creek watershed, specifically Lake Towhee and Lake Nockamixon. Hand pulling is a minimally obtrusive means of controlling the plant on small waterbodies like Lake Towhee. We need your help to control this plant and preserve our lakes!
Volunteers will meet BCCD representative Meghan Rogalus at the Lake Towhee boat launch accessible from the Old Bethlehem Road park entrance (see park map).
Please bring the following:
- canoe, kayak or electric motor boat as available boats are very limited
- life jacket
- thick-soled shoes that can get wet (no flip-flops!)
- sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)
Lunch, heavy duty trash bags, and certificates of recognition will be available for all volunteers. Please come prepared to get wet and muddy while having fun and making a difference for the environment. Please email Meghan to register by July 2nd. Free T shirts to first 50 registrants!
