Football wins, Volleyball loses in packed week of games

Boys Football

In an evening where the skies rained down, the spirits of the Spartan fans could not be dampened as Varsity Football handed Northwestern Lehigh its first defeat of the season in a 28-6 rout. Southern Lehigh’s scoring started with a Ty Edmond run in the second quarter, giving the Spartans a 6-0 lead going into halftime. After halftime, the Spartans continued to dominate, with senior Jake Meluskey carrying a Edmond pass across the goal line, followed by a Dylan Schmidt run with 2:21 left in the quarter.  In the fourth quarter, Jared Gerhard added another touchdown to the Spartan total.

The team heads to Pen Argyl on Saturday to face the Green Knights in an afternoon game at 2:30pm. The team still remains in first place in the Colonial League South Division with a record of 2-2.

The Spartan girls tennis team logged identical 4-1 wins over Palisades on Monday and Palisades on Wednesday. The girls 8-1 record has them in second place behind Moravian Academy, which is undefeated in league play.

This week, the girls will face Moravian Academy on Monday, a chance for the Spartan ladies to upset the division leaders who handed the girls their only league loss. The girls team will also face Notre Dame Green Pond on Tuesday, Saucon Valley on Wednesday and Pen Argyl on Friday. Friday’s game will wrap up the season for the girls. League playoffs will begin Oct. 4 at Northwood Tennis Club.

Girls Volleyball

The girls Volleyball team had a disappointing loss to Parkland this week, losing the match 0-3 -- the Spartan girls' first loss of the season. In the loss, Molly Grammer had 13 kills and one block, Melann Amory had four kills and one block, and freshman Jill Grammer logged 20 assists.

The girls face Pope John Paul II High School on Tuesday at 6:45 at the Spartan home gym.

The girls will be hosting their annual Dig Pink game on Oct. 12. This game, a tradition with rival school Saucon Valley, features pink uniform additions and usually a mostly pink audience. Revenue from the event, including sales of the bright pink T-shirts, benefits breast cancer research.

Boys Soccer

The boys soccer team traveled to Notre Dame East Stroudsburg on Tuesday, soundly defeating the NDES team, 7-0. The boys continued their winning ways at home against Pen Argyl, handing the Green Knights a 6-0 loss. This week the boys meet Palisades at home on Monday and then travel to Notre Dame Green Pond on Wednesday.

Despite the boys' excellent 5-0-1 record, the team is out of first place by virtue of the number of games played and record. The first-place position is held by Moravian Academy with a 6-0 record. But with several key games still to be played, the final division standings are still up for grabs.

Girls Field Hockey

The girls Field Hockey team continues a stellar season, with a glowing 8-0 league record as proof of the team’s excellence. This week, the girls knocked off Pen Argyl, 4-0, and Northwestern Lehigh, 2-1, to continue their winning ways. The girls face Palmerton on Tuesday in the Blue Bomber stadium, while hosting Northern Lehigh at the Spartan home field on Thursday.

In a matchup that could be an omen of the Colonial League championship, the girls face North Division leader Bangor on Friday in the Slater stadium at 4pm.

Varsity Coed Golf

The Golf team finished its season second in the Colonial League South Division with an impressive 13-2 record.

The Colonial League Tournament was held on Wednesday at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course. The Spartan duffers finished as silver medalists in the league behind Notre Dame Green Pond, which snagged the Colonial League championship.

Spartan Golfer James Shaheen, a senior, finished second among all the male golfers with a score of 75, one stroke behind league leader Cole Miller of Northwestern Lehigh.
