SoLeHi Sports Scoreboard Gears up for Fall

Fall Season Begins for Several SoLeHi Teams.

Even though we are still dealing with summer's heat, fall sports are kicking into gear, with action starting this weekend and events beginning next week.

Football Scrimmages at East Stroudsburg North

Boys Freshman, JV and Varsity football participated in a scrimmage Saturday at East Stroudsburg North.  The scrimmage allowed coaches to work out plays and practice positions in a game situation. The boys also enjoyed a lunch before being transported back to the high school. The boys will continue practices this week as they prepare for their next scrimmage Friday at home against Upper Perkiomen.

Boys Middle School Football will host a home scrimmage Wednesday versus Nazareth as the team prepares for its season.

Girls Tennis

The girls Varsity tennis team had a scrimmage against Parkland Saturday as it prepares for another fall season. The tennis program has been strong at Southern Lehigh for the past several years and is looking for another successful year. The girls travel to Blue Mountain on Monday for another preseason scrimmage and have their first league match Wednesday against Palisades High School at Palisades, followed by another home match against Jim Thorpe Thursday at 4pm and an away match at Salisbury Friday at 4pm.

Girls Volleyball

Girls volleyball had a play day Saturday at the high school as it continued preparation for its season. Although the team lost a few seniors to graduation, hopes are strong for a successful fall season.

Boys Soccer

The boys Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer teams traveled to Boyertown on Saturday for a preseason Play Day sponsored by Boyertown High School. The teams are coming off a successful Summer League season. They will be hosting a Play Day at Southern Lehigh on their home fields Saturday beginning at 9am. Stop by for a peek at this year’s teams.

Girls Field Hockey

The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams travel to Quakertown on Tuesday for a scrimmage against Quakertown High School, followed by a scrimmage Wednesday against Souderton High School. The successful field hockey program has produced a number of excellent student athletes in previous years, including several now playing collegiate field hockey.

Varsity Golf

The golf team travels to Bangor for its first match on Monday. The team is coed and begins its season early to take advantage of the nice weather and longer daylight. The team has its first home match Wednesday at 1:45pm against Wilson and then travels to Notre Dame Green Pond on Thursday for match at 2:45pm, followed by a match against Salisbury at home on Friday.

Boys and Girls Cross Country

The cross country team has been putting in miles preparing for its season. Cross country events tend to be held as multischool matches, similar to track and field. The team will not be participating in its first event until Sept. 7, but the team can be seen around the high school fields and roads getting in shape for the season.

FUN RUNS

Fall is bringing cooler weather that is much more pleasant for running.  Many events will be hosted in the upcoming weeks, including:

, Aug. 27 at 8am. This event leaves from and meanders through farmland, with plenty of farm stops for treats along the way. The event benefits Sowing Seeds, an agricultural conservation program. 

Morning Star Rotary 10K and 5K Run/Walk, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 8am – this interesting event also includes awards for those running in kilts. Information can be found on the event's website. The race will benefit Special Olympics and other charitable organizations.

Third-Annual Catherine Boulay Foundation Fight Like a Girl 5K Run-Walk-Family Fun Day, Saturday, Sept. 17, 9 am, at Lehigh Parkway. The event is designed to support cancer patients, families and caregivers on their journey through cancer. More information can be found on the event's website.

Isa’s Run for a Cure First-Annual 5K Run&Walk, Saturday, Sept. 17, 8am, at the Bethlehem Rose Garden. Isabella “Isa” Gonzalez has been fighting cancer since she was 4 weeks old, and money from this run will be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand. For more information, contact Alisa Gonzalez at 610-849-2447.

10th Annual Northampton Boro Rec Center 5K Race, Saturday, Oct. 1 at 9:30am. All proceeds benefit the Northampton Borough Recreation Center. For additional information, contact Robert Weinhofer at 610-502-2990.
