SoLeHi Sports Scoreboard: Summer Edition

Summer brings recreation opportunities and more summer league action

Since many organized sports take some time off over the summer, we will be debuting two summer features in SoLeHi Scoreboard that will allow us to focus on other recreational opportunities as well as individual athletes.  Starting today we will feature a local recreation area each week, designed to give you information about some alternative athletic and recreational opportunities.  Starting next week will be the Athlete Spotlight, spotlighting some of our fine athletes in the area.  We will continue to feature the activities of our local teams as they occur and will shift back to our focus on local athletics in the fall..

THIS WEEKS FEATURE RECREATION AREA:  LAKE NOCKAMIXON STATE PARK

A short drive away from SoLeHi is Lake Nockamixon State Park.  The 5,286-acre park is centered around a 1450 acre lake.  The park is a prime destination for picnicking, visiting the pool, hiking, fishing, biking and boating.

As a boating destination, the lake is a local gem, featuring four lauch sites.  For small craft such as kayaks, the Haycock Launch area, which is just off of Rt 563 is very convenient.  The lake also has a marina and watercraft up to 20 hp are permitted on the lake.  Boats can also be rented at the lake.  Please remember that even kayaks are required to have permits and all boaters must have the correct flotation devices.

There are also easy bike trails that wind through the day use area, great for the kids to bike while parents walk or bike along.  Also the 35 miles of hiking trails provide easy to more challenging walking opportunities, providing a range of exercise opportunities.

Make some time to visit this excellent recreational area which is close to home.  More information on the park, including maps and links to state fishing and boating regulations can be found on the state website  http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/nockamixon.aspx

BOYS BASKETBALL

Summer league continues for the Varsity team.  Although they dropped their first  two games, the Varsity games gave coaches plenty of time to experiment with the line-up and take a look at the upcoming talent for the season.  Highlights included fall sophomore Casey Krause hitting 2 three pointers and 2 two pointers in the second half of the Allen game, sparking a rally for the team.  Casey had 12 points in the game.  Chris Mobley was the high scorer for the team in the Dierolf game, with 11 points.  In Junior Varsity play, three players put up an impressive 43 of the 47 points in the win against the Salisbury Falcons.  Troy Reppert (12 points) also played impressive defense under the boards, stopping Salisbury in their tracks, while Casey Krause (15 points) kept the team on track with his smooth ball handling.  High Scorer Mike Zabrecky (16 points) went 9 for 10 from the foul line, hitting 9 consecutive foul shots in the final minutes of the game, sealing the win over the Falcons.

BOYS TENNIS

The boys tennis team garnered two additional honors.  The team was selected as the Morning Call’s AAA Team of the Year.  In addition, Coach Andraea Drabenstott was honored as the Boys Tennis Coach of the Year by the Call.  The team finished up their season this year with a 21-2 record.

GIRLS SOCCER

Congratulations go to Karleigh Blum for being selected the MVP of the 2011 Lions’ All-Star Girls’ Soccer game.  The game was held Sunday, June 5 at Andrew Leh Stadium in Nazareth.  The game pits all-stars from the Colonial League against all stars from the Lehigh Valley League.  The Colonial League came out on top, 2-1.

SOUTHERN LEHIGH SWIMMING

The Southern Lehigh Stingrays will participate in their first meet June 16th at Hanover.  The Stingrays are part of the Suburban Swim League, which includes SoLeHi, Hanover, Whitehall, Palmerton, Quakertown, Northampton, Northern Lehigh, Macungie and Lower Macungie.  Last year, the team did very well in the League, finishing second behind Hanover.  The meet on Thursday should give an idea how these two competitive teams will stack up against each other.

YOUTH SOCCER

Fall 2011 U6/U8/U10  soccer registration will be held at the Coopersburg VFW on Monday, June 13 from 6:30pm – 9:00 pm and Wednesday, June 15 from 6:30pm – 9:00 pm.  Children can participate either in the in-house intramural program or the Northern Valley Fall Intramural program.  The in-house program is designed to teach basic soccer skills and is a great starting point to learn a fun sport.  The Northern Valley Fall Intramural program allows players to continue to develop skills.  Players will play other teams within the Norther Valley league.  For more information check out the Southern Lehigh Youth Soccer website, www.slsl.org.

YOUTH FOOTBALL

Southern Lehigh Youth Football will host their last scheduled signup on Saturday, June 18th.  Forms are available on-line or can be filled out at the sign-up.  SLYF has a 49 year history of serving the community and offers several weight classes of football, as well as a cheerleading program

Southern Lehigh also is the home of the Upper Saucon Storm Youth Football Club.  Although they have had their last registration event, please send them an e-mail at uppersauconstorm@gmail.com for registration.  Several weight classes and cheerleading are also available with the Storm program.

FUN RUNS

Fun runs and walks are a great way to get in shape over the summer.  In many cases, these runs and walks benefit area charities.  This week, the following two fun runs will be taking place

  • Wilson Area Partners in Education Foundation 5-K & 1-Mile Fun Walk in Easton, PA on Saturday the 18th.   This is the fifth year for this event.  Racers may contact Doug Wagner by email at dwagner@wilsonareasd.org or by phone 484-373-6000
  • Monocacy Trail 5-K Race  Bethlehem, PA  on Sunday, the 19th.   The run begins at 9 am and the walk begins at 11 am.   All money raised will be used to fund programs to make the Monocacy Way more user-friendly.  For more information, contact Julie Vitale by e-mail at vitale@gmail.com or by phone at 610-597-1222
