SoLeHi Sports Scoreboard - Summer Edition

Athletes prevail over scorching heat.

With many sports being outdoors during the summer, the heat played a factor in many athletic competitions this week. Athletes edged close to heat exhaustion with only minutes worth of activity. Despite the extreme heat, sports went on and many athletes prevailed despite the hellish temperatures and humidity.

BOYS SOCCER

The Boys Summer League team, coached by Kevin Fuller, won the Lehigh Valley Summer League Championship in the sweltering heat against a tough Pennridge team. The boys beat Pennridge in a game that went into double overtime and penalty kicks. This was the second game during the playoffs that ended this way for the tough Spartan team. The boys have a brief hiatus and then will begin gearing up for fall play.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Summer League basketball resumed at Cedar Beach. The Varsity boys dropped Wednesday’s game to Emmaus.  Despite the evening start time, temperatures were still near record levels.  With only one substitute, the boys struggled to compete against a team with a full bench. JV basketball fared much better with the Spartan boys spanking LV Storm 62-31 on Friday. Troy Reppert was high scorer with 18 points, followed by Dylan Schmidt with 15 and Casey Krause and Mike Zabrecky with 10 each. The JV boys continued their dominance in a game against Allen that was moved to an non-air conditioned gym. Despite the crippling heat and humidity, the boys once again dominated, 49-22. Casey Krause led scoring with 15 points. Troy Reppert added 10 points. Mike Zabrecky scored nine points before leaving the game due to heat exhaustion.

SOUTHERN LEHIGH SWIMMING

Swim team championships were held Saturday, June 23.  A list of athletes participating in the championships can be found on the swim team website. Results of the championships will be reported in an upcoming Scoreboard.

 NEARBY SPORTS NEWS

Hellertown Little League played host to the Pennsylvania State Championship for girls softball ages 9 and 10. The heat caused games to be rescheduled to early hours and were stopped frequently to allow for water breaks for both players and officials. The championship was won by Greater Wyoming Valley (GWA). In a twist of fate, the GWA team returned home after pool play, thinking it had lost the tie breaker. However, the girls were called to return to the competition after an error was discovered in the interpretation of tie-breaker rules. The girls powered on to beat a tough West Point team 8-3 to win the championship.

 FUN RUNS

Local ski and resort area Bear Creek Mountain will be the site of the Bald Bear Triathlon (July 30) and the Dirty Bear Z-Terra Triathlon (July 31). Descriptions of these events and more information can be found on the Bear Creek website.

For total fun, consider the 31st annual 5 Bars 10 km Beer Run, which will be held Saturday, Aug. 6 beginning at 4pm at the Iron Horse Restaurant in Alburtis.  This run is definitely NOT competitive, with running faster than 7 minutes per mile being strictly prohibited. It is, however, an opportunity to have a good time and meet new people.  Contact Fran Gough at 610-377-7530 for details.
