Do YOU know where Lake Towhee Park is??

THIS WEEK'S FEATURED RECREATION AREA:  Lake Towhee Park

Since it is dwarfed by the nearby and much larger Lake Nockamixon, many residents may not know about Lake Towhee park, a small Bucks County gem nestled in Applebachsville, off of Old Bethlehem Pike.  A short drive from Upper Saucon, the park offers picnicking, play areas and hiking opportunities. However, it is probably best known for boating and fishing opportunities. The park offers easy launch access for boats and numerous locations for the fishing enthusiast. Due to the smaller size and stiller waters, this lake is often a favorite for fishing enthusiasts looking for winter ice fishing opportunitites.

The park will be one of the locations used for a Junior Fishing Camp hosted by Bucks County Parks and Recreation July 18-22, and again in August. The camp is targeted toward youth ages 9 through 14 and costs $50 per child. For additional information on the camp, contact parksandrecreation@co.bucks.pa.us . For more information about youth camps featuring boating and fishing opportunities in nearby Bucks County, visit the website.

SPORTSFEST SLATED TO START IN LEHIGH VALLEY JULY 14

SportsFest starts this week in the Lehigh Valley.  Centered in the Allentown Park System, SportsFest offers classic summer sports such as outdoor basketball and softball, but adds in many lesser known sports such as dog agility, kickball, disc golf and puttle (a game that knocks down Puttle pins with a putted golf ball). The Fest offers a unique opportunity for not only local athletes but sports enthusiasts to enjoy a rather eclectic mix of events in one venue.  For a complete schedule of SportsFest events, visit the SportsFest website

STELLAR TOURNAMENT RESULTS

Cedar Beach in Allentown provided the setting this weekend for the Stellar “Catch a Rising Star” Basketball Showcase.  The showcase, billed as the largest outdoor high school tournament in the country, provides an opportunity for high school varsity and junior varsity teams from the area to participate in a competitive tournament event with other local teams as well as teams from the tri-state area.

The Southern Lehigh girls basketball team, as well as the boys varsity and junior varsity teams, participated in the event. The tournament, a double elimination event, requires each team to lose twice before being eliminated.

The varsity boys team were eliminated early, losing first to Notre Dame Green Pond and then to East Stroudsburg South. Chester became the eventual winner of the boys varsity tournament.

The boys junior varsity team lost to Bethlehem Catholic, but then went on to defeat Salisbury to remain in the tournament. The boys were eliminated after losing to Lancaster Catholic. Emmaus won the junior varsity tournament.

The Southern Lehigh girls basketball team put in a strong showing, beating out Freedom, Pocono Mountain West and Notre Dame to move forward into final tournament games. The girls first lost to Northwestern and then Parkland Red before being eliminated. The Oley Blue team was declared the winner after defeating Parkland Red.

The Stellar Tournament also hosted Wayne Clark, a former Harlem Globetrotter, as well as a Slam Dunk competition on Sunday.
